Online video sparks idea for community-changing club

Siyanda Sopangisa is the co-founder of the Khayelitsha Canoe Club – a company that is changing the lives of his community. But it all started with a video clip. Siyanda says he fell in love with adventure sports and got the idea for his business when he saw an online video showcasing a canoe club in KwaZulu-Natal.

He and his brother Akhona set out to create their own club in 2013. They started with only one boat, which they had found in the neighbourhood and bought for R70.

However, four years later, the club is thriving. They initially only trained local youth in canoeing, but Siyandawanted to help the community at large. As such, he reached out to a local adventure company – and they have partnered to create tourist outings hosted by the club.
